Wilga cup 2013

Contest Eurotour Wilga cup Ukraine 2013

For several years I wanted to visit Ukraine, especially Kharkiv, because it is considered, that the competition is something special there. Well, this year I managed to make all the necessary arrangements on time and so I was able to book a flight ticket from Brnik to Vienna and then a direct flight to Kharkiv. The connections are pretty good, but the waiting time for the flight to Ukraine is a little too long, so for the next year I prefer to fly to Kharkiv directly from Vienna. It will take three hours by car to Vienna, but I'll survive...

Interestingly, the ticket from Brnik to Kharkiv is cheaper than a direct flight from Vienna. The airport in Kharkiv is small, about the size of our airport Brnik, but it is modern and beautifully arranged. The only disturbing thing is an abnormal number of police officers, who patroll up and down the terminal.

Since I arrived in the former communist country, the bureaucracy is, of course, in the first place, meaning that I was at customs almost half an hour...

Following examination of the model, stations, personal baggage and me, I was finally let out, where  Vladimir's son has already waited for me. Along the way I looked at a new country, because I was in Ukraine for the first time. I was most surprised by a really very bad roads and many old cars Lada, on which there were more rust than healthy sheet metal...

Sports airport is about half an hour drive from the capital and it was already quite crowded with modelers. To our criteria, the airport is really huge. On the entrance is a small museum with some 21 MIGs and helicopters. A few acrobats Su 26, a UL aircraft Albatros L-39 and An-2 for transport of paratroopers are all ready to fly. I did not know, that Albatros can take off from the grass airstrip...

When the competition has already trained, I started to assemble the model, but I was constantly disturbed by somebody, who offered me a glass of Vodka – that was perfectly normal for that place... I have never seen so many contestants in one place, because the competition has taken place in three different categories F3J, F3K and F5J. It was slowly getting dark and I managed to finish a few flights, but I would not be able to drive a car... Vladimir invited us to dinner, but first we had to visit the sauna, where we had a debate about everything that flies, and crawls. Vladimir's company celebrates the 20th anniversary this year, so he did his best for Saturday's "festivity", but until then
there was still a long way to go...

After a short night, on Saturday at 6:30 a bus drove us to the airport, where we have completed all the formalities around applications, food and groups. I signed up in a team with two competitors from Singapur Loh Vincent and Yong Wee Panga and our group was named "MIX EMOTION". Saturday was hot, with the temperature about 30°C, with the SW wind around 5 m/s. I haven't risked much in the first flight, so the starting height about 120 m, was pretty good for the start. There was enough thermals until late afternoon, when the “mess” began...

On Saturday we flew four flights and I finished as the second behind Stefan Eder. The night approached and promised celebration... It is better that it don't write anything more, because you can imagine well a combination of vodka, beer, music and everything that goes along...

Sunday was quite the opposite of Saturday, a strong and cool wind from the North started to blow and it was only about 15°C... and this was the right weather for me and my Electra. I made 1000 points in the last few flights, managed to came very close to Stefan and increased my percentage to 99%.

After lunch, the F5J and F3J fly-off flights took place. I started all three final flights from the same altitude and from the same position... that was something that I've never experienced before. When you managed to find the lift, it was necessary to accumulate as much height as possible, because when you entered the sink, it was so strong, that you was not able to return, even with the help of the motor.

In the first final flight, Stefan made a mistake, so I had to watch only on Tomasz Frak from Poland. In my opinion he is very good pilot, who also has a good model. However, he also made a mistake on landing. That gave me enough advantage, so there was no need to fly on the "the cutting edge" in the last two final flights... I have to admit, that I took this competition tactically really superb.

After the final individual victory, we also celebrated the winning of our team MIX EMOTION. It was really amazing... Fantastic.

Let me write just a few words about models and the F3J category. Almost 90% of competing models were Vladimir's. There were also a few models from NAN, only one Satori and my Electra.

After a long time I had the opportunity to see F3J and I must admit that I have no nostalgia. In my opinion, this discipline is going to “distinct” in just a few years. In any case, models that are now popular in F3J, can not be competitive in F5J and the difference between the models will definitely grow in the next years...
Vladimir's team has done a magnificent match, a unique atmosphere and socializing, which I will remember for my whole life. Nevertheless I'm already looking forward to Wilga cup 2014... :-)

See you there...
